Khiva Door Hardware Restoration

Our Restoration Services

From initial assessment through precision fitting, we guide your doors and hardware through a comprehensive restoration journey that honors tradition while ensuring structural integrity.

The Restoration Process

From assessment to finished installation

Step 1: Initial Assessment

We begin with a thorough on-site evaluation of your doors and hardware. Our craftspeople examine the condition of brass handles, hinges, carved wood panels, and structural elements. We photograph details, assess damage, and determine the scope of restoration required. This step establishes a clear roadmap for the work ahead.

Step 2: Cleaning & Preparation

Brass hardware is carefully cleaned using traditional methods that remove oxidation and surface corrosion without damaging patina or fine details. Carved wood is gently cleaned and prepared for any necessary repairs. We work methodically to preserve the authentic character of each piece while restoring its visual clarity.

Step 3: Repair & Refinishing

Damaged brass is repaired or selectively refinished using hand techniques that match the original finish. Carved wood elements are restored through careful conditioning and, where needed, hand-carving to repair missing details. Each repair is executed with attention to historical accuracy and seamless integration with the existing work.

Step 4: Precision Fitting & Installation

Once restoration is complete, hardware is fitted with meticulous attention to alignment, function, and aesthetics. Hinges are adjusted so doors hang true and operate smoothly. Handles are positioned for both comfort and visual balance. Installation is performed on-site, ensuring your doors are ready to serve for generations to come.

Precision Fitting & Installation

Aligning tradition with structural integrity

Expert craftspeople performing precision fitting of door hardware

Our Fitting Methodology

Fitting is where restoration becomes functional art. Our craftspeople use hand tools and traditional techniques to ensure every handle, hinge, and decorative element aligns perfectly with your door's structure and aesthetic. We measure twice, fit once, and make adjustments on-site to guarantee smooth operation and visual harmony.

Techniques & Tools We Employ:

  • Hand-planing and chiseling for precise hinge mortises
  • Traditional alignment methods using level and plumb
  • Custom shims and spacers for perfect fit on older door frames
  • Hand-tightening and testing of all hardware for smooth function
  • Final adjustments to ensure doors close properly and latches engage

We understand that no two doors are identical, especially in heritage buildings where time and settling have created unique variations. Our approach is flexible, responsive, and always focused on preserving the integrity of your doors while achieving flawless function.

Materials We Work With

Brass, carved wood, traditional hinges, and decorative handles

Brass Hardware

We specialize in restoring traditional brass handles, hinges, locks, and decorative escutcheons. Our craftspeople understand the patina and finish variations across different eras and regions, and we work to preserve authentic character while restoring clarity and function.

  • Ornamental handles and knobs
  • Traditional butt and strap hinges
  • Brass locks and latching mechanisms
  • Decorative plates and escutcheons

Carved Wood Panels

Hand-carved wooden door panels are the soul of heritage entryways. We restore these intricate elements using traditional wood-working techniques, repairing damage, conditioning finishes, and where necessary, hand-carving missing details to match original patterns.

  • Geometric and floral carved patterns
  • Wood conditioning and finish restoration
  • Structural repairs to frames and panels
  • Hand-carving of missing or damaged details

Traditional Hinges

Hinges are critical to both function and aesthetics. We restore traditional hinge styles, ensuring they operate smoothly while maintaining the visual integrity of your door's design. Our work includes alignment, lubrication, and any necessary replacement of worn components.

  • Butt hinges (mortised and surface-mounted)
  • Strap hinges and decorative variants
  • Pin replacement and bearing restoration
  • Alignment and adjustment for smooth operation

Decorative Elements

Beyond functional hardware, we restore decorative studs, nail heads, corner plates, and other embellishments that contribute to your door's character. These details are carefully cleaned, repaired, or replaced to match the original aesthetic.

  • Brass studs and decorative nails
  • Corner and edge plates
  • Ornamental rings and door knockers
  • Custom-matched replacements when needed

What Restoration Can and Cannot Achieve

We can: Restore original finishes, repair structural damage, clean and condition materials, match missing details, and return hardware to full function while preserving historical character.

We cannot: Completely remove deep pitting or significant corrosion without altering the material; change the fundamental design or style of your hardware; or guarantee results on materials damaged beyond structural repair. Our goal is always to preserve rather than replace.
